Ganley Luncheon

The Chief John P. Ganley Community Service Award is presented to an individual who has exhibited concern, involvement and leadership in the community of Salem; while providing inspiration to others, through his or her dedication, integrity and courage in the manner exemplified by Chief John P. Ganley during his life on earth.”   Chief Ganley passed away in March of 1989 but his commitment to the community is carried forward and recognized each year on St. Patrick’s Day.

This year’s honoree is long-time Salem resident Michael Collins.  As a young man, Michael was actively involved in many organizations and helped to grow them, as he himself grew.  As a young leader in the community, he was elected to New Hampshire’s House of Representatives.

He served for 27 years as a member of the Club’s Board of Directors and for two terms as its President. In 1997, he was honored as the Club’s Man of the Year.  He was part of the Building Committee during the Club’s 2004 capital campaign and renovation project, Building Tomorrow’s Dreams.  Michael committed his time and effort to the Salem Boys and Girls Club inspiring many over the years to get involved.  He has never been afraid to ask others to give of their time and talent to help make the Club truly “The Positive Place For Kids.”

Michael has been a long time member of the Board of Directors of Salemhaven and Silverthorne Adult Day Program.  He has been inspirational in the reconstruction of both facilities in recent years.  Michael continues to be involved in many organizations and constantly puts his family and community first.  Like Jack Ganley, Mike is one of the first people called when something needs to be accomplished and he always steps up to help others in need.

Members of the community are invited to honor Michael as the Ganley Family presents him with the John P. Ganley Community Service Award on Tuesday, March 17th, 2010 at the John P. Ganley/St. Patrick’s Day Memorial Award Luncheon.  Doors open at 11:00 a.m. for refreshments.  The program gets underway at 12:00 p.m.  A meal of corned beef and cabbage will be served followed by the presentation of The Ganley Community Service Award.  New Hampshire’s Pipes & Drums Band opens the luncheon and the music continues with Irish favorites performed by The Andy Healy Band.

Past recipients have included Richard "Dick" O'Shaughnessy, Emmett Horgan, Emil Corrente, Sally Sweet, Jim Ross, Jim Sayer, the late Patricia Keegan, Norman Marshall, Dave Tilton, Joan Sabatini, Larry Belair, Joe Delahunty, Beverly Glynn, George Khoury, Charles “Chuck” Morse, Ed Callahan, Alan Phair, Chanel Simard, Michael and Nancy Carney.
