Project Learn!

Project Learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the hours they spend at the Club. The program is based on Dr. Reginald Clark's research showing that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in "fun" but academically beneficial activities. Through Project Learn, Club staff use all the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for these "high-yeild learning activities," which include leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgable adults, helping others, homework help and tutoring and games like Scrabble that develop young people's cognitive skills. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between Club staff and school personnel as critical factors in creating the best after-school learning environment for Club members. Extensively field-tested and formally evaluated by Columbia University with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Project Learn has been proven to boost the academic performance of Club members.

Get your homework done and earn Clubbys in the process! Clubbys are our Club's official currency (see below for more information). Not only can members buy things with their Clubbys, POWER HOUR members are eligible to win lots of great prizes like a TV/DVD Player, Nintendo GameCube, iPod Mini, etc. The POWER HOUR program is sponsored nationally by The JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

POWER HOUR is offered Monday-Thursday from 4:00-5:45 p.m. and includes:

• A quiet room to complete homework assignments
• Adult staff to assist with homework
• Volunteer tutors and homework helpers
• Educational resources
• Use of our fully-equipped Computer Lab, including Comcast Internet access and Microsoft software.

The Clubby Bank and Store

Members learn the value of money through our Club Currency, Clubbys. Kids can earn Clubbys all over the Club (in POWER HOUR, as a tournament prize, for doing a good deed) and deposit them into the Clubby Bank. When they accumulate enough Clubbys, they can spend their earnings at the Clubby Retail Store/Convenience Store, run by our Torch Club and members. The stores includes great merchandise like Life is Good apparel, and gift certificates to local businesses such as Glenn's Kreme and Kone, Barnes & Noble, Chili's, Park Place Lanes, snacks, drinks, school supplies and much more!

Other Educational Programs

• Clubby Recycling Company:The Club now recycles newspaper, computer paper, empty printer ink cartridges, Laptops, PDAs, and old used cell phones. The money earned will go towards various causes such as Education programs and charities. Members and their parents are asked to bring in empty printer ink cartridges, Laptops, PDAs, and old used cell phones to help support this program. • Clubby Stock Market: The Club will be teaming up with local business people to teach children about the stock market and how to invest in it too. This will give kids an opportunity to try and make their Clubby Savings grow.
• Hydroponics Gardening: Thanks to a newly donated hydroponic growing system, the kids will now be engaged in gardening year-round! This technique of gardening uses NO soil, just water and nutrients. The kids will grow everything from string beans and cucumbers to tomatos and lettuce. They will be involved in planting, maintaining the nutrient levels, and harvesting! The vegetables will be used by our cooking program to create a healthy eating menu. In late winter we will prepare for spring planting by getting the seeds rooted and ready to go outside in our brand new garden!
• News Crew: The members will be involved in creating a newsletter based on Club activities. They will take story leads and do some reporting on events in all the program areas of the Club. The newsletter will come out monthly covering the previous months activities. The kids will be responsible for the layout and final completion of the newsletter, as well as, distribution to families and friends. We will aim to visit a local newspaper and TV news facility, as well as create and produce our very own live broadcast of the Club news!
